Michal Mokry Bonsai Pots - The Netherlands

Michal Mokry is a well-regarded bonsai ceramist from the Netherlands currently producing exciting, glazed bonsai pots in contemporary designs, inspired by core traditional styles.

Born and raised in Slovakia, Michal made the Netherlands his home soon after finishing Medical school and has been passionate about bonsai since 2011. In 2018 Michal won 1st place at the EBA NTC in Arco, Italy! (Europe’s official bonsai artist contest for new talent.)

In 2020, Michal started his journey into bonsai ceramics. An associate professor in experimental cardiology in the day, he unwinds after work by creating pots. Working with the clay, Michal says, allows him clear his mind.

Mindful of the intricates of bonsai display, this artist strives to creating pots that work most harmoniously with a tree. With clean straight lines, and often seamlessly integrated feet, the tree remains the main focus of the composition, yet on closer inspection the shibui quality and dynamic glazes never fail to astound!

Pots are made by a variety of methods, including ‘kurinuki’ hand-carved mame sized pots, and slab building for the Shohin and larger pots. Michal has also made some of his own forms/molds by way of 3D printing, which he uses to help form the main body of more complex designs.

‘’I find glazing to be the most exciting part of making pots as it transforms a plain piece of clay into something vibrant and full of life. I enjoy experimenting with new blends. I tweak commercial glazes by adding different ingredients like metal oxides, fluxes, ash, pigments, or grains of various frits, and even previously fired and ground glazes. The possibilities are vast and a lot of it comes down to intuition and a sheer luck, especially when a new mix turns out unexpectedly well.’’
