Whilst strolling along the Swiss rivers, on Tanseki tours (searching for Suiseki), a bird that Sandro often observes, by the clay of the river bank, is the Kingfisher – Kawasemi. .. Or does it observe him?
Sandro Tschudin is a Suiseki specialists from the beautiful city of Lucerne, which sits on Lake Lucerne, amid the snow-capped Swiss Alps, an idyllic location for both stone appreciation and Tanseki (stone collecting). This great passion takes Sandro out of the classroom, where he is a secondary school teacher, and into the natural surroundings in which he thrives.
An experienced and talented Daiza carver , Sandro has been a Bonsai and Suiseki enthusiast for over 20 years. Although making Daiza since 2003, over the past decade, Sandro started to carve Daiza for customers. With highly refined finishes and excellent unique designs, today Sandro’s Daiza are in the collections of many European and American Suiseki collectors. Sandro has carved over 250 Daiza over the last twenty years and his work is highly valued within the Suiseki community.
Sandro's wife, Nadja, is a ceramist specialising in Suiban. Her excellent works are of a high quality, with classical designs, that complement the subtle nuances of Suiban display. Together, Sandro and Nadja have created 'Kawasemi Studios'. 'Our aim is to provide everything you need for Suiseki: stones, the wooden bases, Suiban, matching scrolls and also education and knowledge. Like this we want to share our love for stones and fine arts as well as raise people's awareness of how to combine elements in displays.
‘I maintain contacts in Japan and am thus constantly expanding the possibility of importing antique Japanese scroll paintings and all other presentation elements for Suiseki. Through these relationships, I am able to work with a traditional Hyogo workshop and have Kake (backdrops for Shikishi and Tanzaku) made to measure. Furthermore, I train my eye for Japanese aesthetics in the study of Sumi-e painting.’
