Umi Bonsai Pots - Turkey
By Ilker Durak
Ilker Durak has been a dedicated bonsai enthusiast for over a decade, yet in his home city of Izmir, bonsai ceramics are not easy to find. It was this, combined with his fascination with traditional Chinese and Japanese bonsai pots, that initially inspired Ilker to make his own bonsai pots.
Recognised in the growing Turkish bonsai community as a highly talented potter, Ilker Durak is, by Profession, a full time teacher. In the limited spare time he gets, Ilker delights in creating practical and useful bonsai pots, for his own and his customers trees.
All Ilker Durak bonsai pots are 100% handmade, mostly by slab building and are frost-resistant, being fired to 1200 degrees in his electric kiln. Designs are generally based on classical forms, and Ilker’s glaze work is striking, yet considered, created to complement a trees tones. Ilker uses the kanji 海 as his brandname, as this translates to the name of his daughter, 'Deniz', or in English 'sea'.
