Englert Keramik - Germany
By Martin Englert
Martin Englert
Martin is a talented and highly accomplished bonsai ceramic artist from Osnabrück, Germany who has been creating superb bonsai ceramics since 2001. In 2019 Martin was given the huge honour of being invited to participate in the prestigious 2019 'Gafu-Ten' ceramic competition and was awarded the silver medal in the category for painted bonsai pots. He has again been invited to return in 2021.
The high quality bonsai pots are fired in a wood-fired kiln at temperatures of up to 1300°C (2370°F). The beauty of these pots is created by fire, ash and the kiln‘s turbulent atmosphere. The charm of this costly and exhausting technique is the natural beauty of the resulting surfaces. Not surprisingly wood-fired ceramics are deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. They are an example of artisanal tradition and the idealised beauty of nature - just like a bonsai.
In addition, I create one-of-a-kind pots made from the finest porcelain which are decorated with paintings inspired by Chinese and Japanese art and tradition. This is the most delightful contrast to the wood-firing with its archaic naturalness. Total control and meditative precision. The process of porcelain building, glazing, painting and firing. The polarity of these two techniques highly fascinates me.
Each shell is freely made by hand. The goal is a design language that blends perfectly with the particular bonsai, but is as simple as possible. That gives me the freedom to vary the shape and size of every one. By choosing a special clay out of a huge variety of different clay types I also set the basis for the aesthetics of the pot and its appearance after firing.
