Me and Raimondi

Matjaž and Nastja are two very talented artists who create unique, high quality handmade bonsai ceramics from their pottery studio in the old part of the town of Izola, Slovenia.

Nastja has always been artistic, and as can be seen in her work, her background is in Architecture. She now creates pots full time. Her partner, Raimondi, who is a keen bonsai enthusiast joins her after his day job with the police. Raimondi understands bonsai, and the traditional ‘rules’ of bonsai ceramics – which is always the best start to move forward from. They are both extremely passionate and meticulous and drive each other’s creativity.

Always experimenting with new designs and especially with glazes, Matjaž and Nastja are eager to continue learning and improving - the pair have mastered various techniques. Nastja generally prefers to wheel throw and Matjaž creates most of the slab built pots, although most will have been worked on by them both. The results are quite outstanding!

‘We find inspiration everywhere, in details. For example, a very special detail on a very old house, from old Japanese or Chinese bonsai pots, but mostly in nature, in rocks, stones, trees. Perfection of imperfection. Pots which are “perfect” looks like they were made in a factory. It must be seen that were made out of a human hand. On the other side they must be perfect, or at least we try. There are many hours that we devote to details… sometimes one feet takes longer to make than the whole main form. We also try to incorporate the organic shapes into details of our pots.
In generally we follow the rules about shapes and colors, which are common in bonsai world with a piece of our creativity. On our pots one can see mostly traditional lines with some of our twists… artistic touches’.

Although they had been dreaming of it much longer, having only been making bonsai pots for since 2016, it really is incredible the level of skill and attention to detail afforded their creations. ‘They say if you can’t stop thinking about it don’t stop working for it.’ We are sure that ‘Me and Raimondi’ have a very rewarding career in European bonsai pottery to look forward to.
