Jürg Stäheli
Having been an avid bonsai enthusiast since 1984, Jürg Stäheli of Switzerland is a modest, yet extremely accomplished creator of high quality bonsai ceramics. Although production levels remain low, his inspiring works can sometimes been seen housing trees at exhibitions and represent an important part of European bonsai ceramics.
Twenty years ago, Jürg began creating bonsai pots for his own personal bonsai creations, which were developed with meticulous care and attention, examples of which can be seen below. The majority of his pots are glazed ovals and rectangles, which were designed for pairing with deciduous trees. Pots are hand-made and fired in an electric kiln, up to 1250° C, making them frost resistant and durable in sub-zero weather conditions. Staheli pots are made to classical designs, with clean lines and well-proportioned forms. They are finished in enviable glazes in natural, often muted tones.
Inspiration has always come from the high quality ceramics of Asia, and Stäheli’s style of pots incorporates ‘extremely simple lines & restraint from daring’. As a stone sculptor by trade, Jürg is used to working with his hands in a creative manner, and this love of form can also be seen in his bonsai ceramics.
