EBPC Potter Profiles
By Jose Antonio Guerao
Born in Totana in Murcia, Spain, Guerao is an experienced and passionate ceramic artist with over 15 years of experience. His varied and well executed designs are generally based on proven classical forms, interpreted in his style – and with some fantastic glazes.
Creating quality hand built pots of different forms and sizes is his passion and Guerao strives to emulate the great potters of Japan. To this end, he is one of the very few Westerners to have visited Japan and trained under ‘Nakano Gyouzan’ san – arguably the world’s best living potter for unglazed bonsai ceramics. His skill base is evident by the wonderful designs and variety of techniques he employs, especially including the potter’s wheel, and slab building. He is well respected in the field and gives lectures and demonstrations, as well as conducting raku courses to students.
As with the best bonsai potters, Guerao has not only studied classical Japanese and Chinese pottery, he also understands bonsai and the needs of a container in relation to a tree.
He has long been a bonsai enthusiast himself, and initially created bonsai pots for his own trees. Friends and other enthusiasts soon began to want a Guerao pot for their own trees, and although production levels remain low, his pots are now sought after across Spain and further field.
