By Jurgen Robyns
Flow Studio Belgium is the new ceramics studio of Jurgen Robyns, formerly owner of Makisada Ceramics. As Makisada, Flow mainly focuses on one-off handmade and eastern inspired ceramic vessels for bonsai. No moulds, no extruder shapes, no mass production. Only 100% handmade items.
Flow is for me the state of mind I can only find in creating ceramics. It is the exalted emotion that calms me down. Furthermore it is the mirror word for Wolf, my totem animal I received now decades ago. Some people even called me Wolf instead of my birth name for years.
The red Flow logo consists of different pot shapes, which together form some kind of turtle shell, reminiscent of the Japanese flag, a safe haven for what it contains: your treasured bonsai tree or unique accent plant.
Red was chosen because this is the colour all Flow pots take when they are fired at 1250° C. Firing them so high makes them frost resistant and waterproof, since the clay sinters at this temperature. Sintering is a process in which materials are heated to a temperature at which they just don't melt. In this way, the contact points between the clay elements grow, which creates a very hard material.
Flow accepts limited commissions, but always discusses acceptance in advance (timing, agenda, design, size, colour, ...). When a commission is accepted, a first concept will be drawn on paper to formalise the process.

Notes on FLOW Studios Commissions:
- I prefer personal contact, with me at home, so I can see the tree myself and we can discuss the options.
Online commissions are possible.
- I draw one or more design by hand for approval, before I start with the creation.
- If it’s a pot with no specific features that stand out and when it’s in line with the Flow line, there’s no obligation to buy.
- If there’s a personalisation or if not exactly in line with other Flow pots, I accept 1/2 of the payment in advance, 1/2 on delivery.
- Expect around 2 months for a new creation (creation, drying process, first firing at 900 degrees C. Second and/or third firing at 1250 degrees C)
- Once the pot is ready, it can be picked up. I’ll make some good coffee to discuss the end result.
- Commissions can be sent to the client (shipping fees are to be paid by the new owner).
