Zeinab Emami
Zey Ceramics is based at the ancient gateway to the East, in the beautiful city of Istanbul, and is run by the diversely talented Zeinab Emami.
Having been a full time since 2016, Zeinab is one of just a few in Europe to have made her living solely from bonsai ceramics. She lives with her husband, who runs a bonsai nursery, daughter and their Airedale Terrier, Dino. Zeinab was introduced to ceramics and bonsai by her husband, who ‘greatly motivated me to progress my own style of bonsai ceramics. I am always thankful to him’.
Bonsai has been a hobby for even longer, and Zey Ceramics pots are born out of Zeinab’s love for the trees. …‘While making pots, I enjoy the idea of making a home for a beautiful plant’.
Zey ceramics pots are all hand-made; mostly by the Japanese technique of pressing quality clay slabs into forms (also made by Zeinab) or moulds, to create the main body. The pot is then removed, perhaps altered, and then finished by hand. Pots are also made by the ‘slab building’ technique, without the use of forms. Her pots are fired in an electric kiln which fires up to 1300°C.
For some trees Zeinab also ‘’adds a layer to the character of the pot’’ with glazing. Other pots are made with textured finishes and Zeinab also excels at painting, and occasionally produces some impressive painted porcelain pots.
Zeinab was recently interviewed by a popular television host of the CNN TURK channel.
