Celebrating Excellence: Winners of the North American Bonsai Pottery Contest 2025.

Honouring Artistic Mastery and Innovation in Bonsai Ceramics.

With the significance of bonsai ceramics witnessing an ongoing surge in the West, the 13th of September 2025 saw the birth of the first International North American Bonsai Pottery Contest (NABPC) in Rochester, New York.

The NABPC was a celebration of the art, and the ceramics displayed are truly something to behold. It has been a pleasure to witness such commitment and dedication to the art, by both the extraordinary artists, and by the facilitators of the event.
Picture

Organised by Angelica Ramirez of Discover Potters and hosted by the American Bonsai Society (ABS) as part of their Learning Seminars, this premiere juried exhibition brought together the finest ceramicists from across the North America, each eager to showcase their creativity, technical prowess, and reverence for the art of bonsai ceramics.

Throughout this article, please use the underlined links, for more images and information on the Discover Potters website.

The EBPC is proud to sponsor this prestigious event, and support our bonsai friends across the water. The event is a celebration of traditional and innovative bonsai pottery, and aims to record and further fuel the increasing desire for quality artisanal ceramics.

Included in the display were ceramics by two ‘Honorary’ EBPC members.
Roy Minarai created an exciting display in the honorary display category, and Anthony Smith of Willow Bonsai was awarded 1st place in the ‘contemporary glazed’ category, as seen below.

A showcase of Contemporary & Traditional categories

Artists from across America and Canada produced very impressive entries for the following categories:

  • ECHOES OF TRADITION; Expressions of modern artistry.
    • Traditional Unglazed Category
    • Traditional Glazed Category

  • COSMIC CREATIONS; Pioneering the bonsai frontier.
    • Contemporary Unglazed Category

In addition to the sensational pot contest, visitors were treated to the non-competitive ‘honorary exhibits’ from a selection of celebrated ceramicists, including: Gayle Fiato, Roy Minarai, April Grigsby, Sara Rayner, and by French artist, The Ghost Potter.

Bonsai has a habit of creating lifelong friendships and strong bonds are often formed within the bonsai community, so when the community loses cherished friends and artists, it is always strongly felt by many.

Tribute displays were also created to honour and remember three such friends; Nick Lenz, Pauline Muth, and the U.K.’s Andrew Pearson of Stone Monkey Ceramics.

A testimony of distinction.

Judging a contest with such a varied and impressive selection of entries is no easy task. Being both functional items, and pieces of art in their own right, the ceramic entries displayed high levels of technical ability, combined with a deep appreciation of both bonsai and the ceramics they require. A spectacular display of workmanship, creativity and utility.
Bonsai as an artform is ever evolving, and whilst understanding and respecting the traditions that underlie bonsai is important, innovation and progression of bonsai ceramics is also to be encouraged and celebrated.

The display encompassed a diverse range of artistic styles, forms and finishes, which was exciting to see, as it reflects the diverse range of bonsai trees and styles we cultivate and enjoy. Majestic and elegant traditional forms, expressive glazes, and some highly creative modern designs and interpretations. I would encourage anyone to spend a little time viewing all of the entries, through the links above.

Sharing in a mutual passion

The ABS Exhibition and the NABPC contest take place every two years, with the next edition in 2027. If you can't wait until then for more great bonsai pottery, don't miss the Trophy's European Bonsai Pottery Contest 28th March - 1st March 2026.

We are delighted to announce that some of the winning pots from this NABPC will also be displayed at The European Bonsai Pottery Contest at The Trophy, in Belgium, as honorary exhibits for all to appreciate and enjoy. The winning pots from The Trophy’s EBPC pottery contest will also have the opportunity to be displayed at the NABPC in New York.

This collaboration between the NABPC and the EBPC & The Trophy reflects the friendship and support often found in bonsai, and we are confident it will inspire potters and further strengthen the bonds between our two communities.

When 4 decades of Studio Pottery expertise meets bonsai

30/7/2025

A warm welcome to Eddie Curtis - to the EBPC community of acclaimed bonsai ceramists!

Please join us in welcoming the highly acclaimed Studio Pottery ceramist, Eddie Curtis of the UK to the EBPC.
An exciting and momentous occasion for bonsai and its ceramics. Eddie brings decades of ceramic passion and expertise to European bonsai, with magnificent forms, glazes and textures as of yet unseen in quite this way in the bonsai world. Some of which represent the epitome of traditional Japanese ceramic finishes and others unique and originally created by himself.
Picture
Picture

Having long been a keen grower of bonsai, in his professional career, Eddie has passionately strived to recreate landscapes and natural textures through ceramic form and finishes.
Picture
Along with a tree, the pot is an essential part of a bonsai, both functionally and aesthetically. The appropriate choice of pot can be very useful in promoting certain features of a tree, and in suggesting the environment and story behind that bonsai.

Eddie's magnificent and suggestive bonsai ceramics are tactile and highly emotive, offering the bonsai artist a fresh, alternative approach to pot selection for exhibition quality trees.
Picture
Picture
'Discovered' by our mutual friend, the much loved Andrew Pearson, of Stone Monkey Ceramics, at a prestigious ceramics exhibition, Eddie was persuaded to create a series of pots for use with bonsai, which until then he had only done for his own trees.
A project is also currently underway with Peter Warren, who is creating 2 bonsai through a collaboration of Eddie's work and 2 of his own trees.
Picture
Picture
I believe that the 'crossing over' of this celebreated artist from Studio pottery to bonsai ceramics will be beneficial to the ongoing evolution of European bonsai and its ceramics, which will also introduce the world of bonsai to the far greater audience of studio pottery enthusiasts around the world.
Picture

Look out also for the coming article in 'Neue Keramik' magazine - written by Eddie Curtis, in which the EBPC and Peter Warren have also both contributed, that examines this crossover between the field of Studio Ceramics and the more niche field of Bonsai.
'Neue Keramik' is a German magazine focused on ceramics, and especially 'new ceramics' with both printed and online editions. The magazine also has an English version, reflecting the international nature and popularity of the ceramic field.

Rest In Peace - Andrew Pearson.  1968 - 2024

Commemorating the life

of a great man.

It is with a very heavy heart I write about the tragic passing of a good friend, a great man, and a very influential bonsai ceramicist.
On the morning of Tuesday 3rd December Andrew Pearson passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home in Kent.
Picture
A generous soul. Each year Andrew made & donated such a piece to be auctioned for the Royal British Legion.

A dedicated family man, Andrew was a loving husband and father, and a loyal and caring friend to many, including myself. He will be sorely missed by many. Our thoughts go out to his wife Marie and family.

An original founding member of the EBPC, and a close personal friend, Andrew Pearson of Stone Monkey Ceramics will be long remembered by many for his kind heart, his extraordinary craftsmanship, and the impact he had on bonsai ceramics globally.
From when he began making pottery in 2002, Andrew's pots continued to improve in finesse and popularity. A definite style developed, to which Andrew stayed true, even as his work evolved and he experimented with different types and styles of bonsai pots over time.
Picture
Andrew's work is therefore usually recognisable at a glance, as is often the case for the very best artists.
Picture
Picture
Picture

Instrumental in the formation of the EBPC in 2017, Andrew was not only a big inspiration, but was also very supportive from the very inception. Many exquisite Stone Monkey Ceramics pots, with EBPC stamps, are now in the hands of enthusiasts worldwide, for which we are very grateful to him. Representing Andrew and his world-class bonsai ceramics has been an honour and a pleasure.

Andrew welcomes Anthony Smith of Willow Bonsai, South Africa to his studio.

In 2015, with the encouragement of Peter Warren and Akiyama San, Andrew was invited to take part in the 10th Annual Shohachi contest at the Gafu Ten in Kyoto, Japan.

An incredible honour, especially as non-Japanese were not previously eligable to participated.

Picture
Not only was Andrew the first non-Japanese artist invited to participate in this world leading contest, but he went on to take gold in the unglazed category! His attention to detail was outstanding, in both the razor sharp lines and relief carvings.

In so doing, Andrew helped strengthen the bond with Japanese bonsai, and also open the gates for other leading artists across the world to be able enter this prestigious event.

In 2015 Andrew also decided with friends and fellow well-known potters Tom Benda and Thor Holvila, to meet on a yearly basis at a new location, and produce unique artisanal pieces created as a fusion of three very different styles. The Triskele group was born.
Picture

Annual meetings took place in different countries, including each artist's home country. Each year, after some inspiration, a theme was decided on, and then the creativity was set free.
Picture
Picture
Over the years the EBPC purchased quite a few of these great pieces, which proudly remain in the EBPC collection.

It is a wonder to appreciate Andrew's work within these great pieces, in additional to that of Tom and Thor. This fusion of styles allowed each artist to push their boundaries whilst being altered or embellished by the eye of a fellow artist.
As a thank you for my support, in 2018 the Triskele group kindly presented a wonderful pot to me in the form of Thor's hammer, 'Mjölnir'. Something I will always treasure and am eternally grateful for.

Andrew was also a big fan of studio ceramics, and I was always absorbed when I got the chance to see his collection. Especially fascinating to him were the Mashiko style works resulting from the collaboration between Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada in the 1920's, and the great artists this movement has produced since.
Always very generous with his knowledge, our chats about the intricacies and techniques employed will remain with me, and further encouraged my own captivation and appreciation of yunomi and chawan.

On request for yunomi in green, Andrew was kind enough to make these yunomi for my collection, with tactile manipulated and faceted forms and interesting glazes. The bottom right yunomi was also rake fired and has incredible irridenscence, in addition to dents for thumb and forefinger.
Picture
In a professional capacity, Andrew spent 7 years as a paramedic before joining Transport for London in 1998, to which he dedicated the next 26 years. After just 3 years he had become a fire compliance specialist, at which he excelled. A decade later, in 2011, Andrew progressed to Fire Engineer, which he continued to thrive at until his untimely passing.
At the end of January 2025, Andrew was due to retire from his work at the London Underground, to concentrate on his ceramics full time.

Andrew was very well known in the global bonsai community. He was a multi-award winning artist, and was the feature of a multitude of articles in various magazine and book publications.

Many bonsai potters, including some of Europe & America's most celebrated, have benefited from the help and words of advice of this great artist. Andrew liked to share his knowledge to the benefit of other artists and to improve bonsai ceramics in general.

Andrew's legacy will live on, in those touched by his generous nature, in his thousands of exquisite creations, and through his impact on European and global bonsai ceramics.

Trophy 2024 EBPC Pot Display         The Winning entry!!

22/2/2024

Comments

Congratulations to Patrik Lüthi of Fukurou, Switzerland!

Picture

Exquisite entries from 33 of Europe's most talented bonsai potters were f
eatured this year, in the EBPC Pot Display at the prestigious 'Trophy Bonsai Exhibition' over a magnificent 100ft display.

The quality and diverse variety of entries this year was particularly impressive, with entries ranging from the classical styles, to cutting edge techniques and  contemporary themes. We will look at the display in full in another article.

Picture

The winning entry was this striking wide-rim ceramic pot with a Lotus-shaped form and bespoke wooden base, by Fukurou Ceramics of Switzerland.

The pot has a wonderful blue/green aquamarine glaze, with impressive crystal nucleation
. The lower part of this piece is an intricate, structurally designed wooden base that the pot inserts seamlessly into. Also made by the artist, the structure and inlay technique used here, further showcase his exceptional and varied talents.
Fukurou bonsai pots are made and finished with great care and attention to detail and are popular with some of Europe's leading bonsai artists.

... From Fukurou's EBPC Potter Profile:
'Fukurou Ceramics are the bonsai ceramic creations of Patrik Luthi, a gifted artist from the picturesque country of Switzerland. These high-quality handmade pieces have a touch of the Japanese aesthetic, yet retain a distinctive ‘Fukurou’ style. Designs are inspired by classical forms and are very suitable for use with good quality bonsai trees.
‘As with bonsai, I feel mostly attracted by the traditional pots, but love to develop new glaze recipes and new shapes.’

Being the grandson of a woodsman, and having grown up around the woods, mountains and lakes of Switzerland, Patrik has always had a close affinity with nature and has kept bonsai for over a decade. Studying at the renowned Kitoras Bonsai School under Nicola Crivelli, Patrik has developed a keen eye for bonsai design and aesthetics – an essential requisite for creating high quality bonsai ceramics.

Pots are mostly thrown on a potter’s wheel, or slab built and come in a variety of forms. Unglazed wares come in a range of clays, including a wonderful dark grey, and a reddish-brown clay. No commercial glazes are used, as Patrik enjoys experimenting and creating exciting new glazes.'

Thank you to Patrik, and all of the talented artists that contributed to the magnificent display of bonsai ceramics this year.
Please look out for the coming post on the Pot Display.

Thank you for following and supporting the EPBC.

The reflective glazes of Sabine Besnard

18/12/2023

Comments

A reflection of nature ..

Picture
Picture
The tones and textures of nature have always been the main inspiration for Sabine Besnard's glazes. Together with her husband Francois, glazes are created and recreated, often experimenting for months, until the desired effects are realised.
Below is a catalogue of the wonderful glazes of Sabine Besnard's ceramics.
I hope you enjoy these as much as we have.

Okinawa

'Okinawa is an archipelago of Japanese islands in the Pacific, the turquoise of the water and the multitude of islets remind me of the nucleations of this enamel.
Okinawa enamels are nucleation enamels that on a turquoise or indigo blue base have small concentric crystals of dark color. In a bonsai pot, you must put a tree that remains the focal point, so a tree that by its colors of foliage or flowers or its beauty is not crushed by the pot. It is an enamel that varies from blue to black and it is the balance between the two that is sought, moreover it tends to sink. A capricious and surprising enamel that explains the price of the most successful Okinawa pots.'
Picture

Lichen

One of the last enamels we have developed, Lichen has a green background with black nucleations that sometimes turn white. If it is laid very thin it becomes pale blue but very thick it is black. A curiosity that allows you to create landscapes with a single enamel.
This glaze is matte, and the thickness-induced multi- colour variations,
result in very unique pots, that fit well with deciduous trees.
Picture

Yuki d'Or Bleu

New Blue Gold Yuki Enamel
With such oak ash glazes, you can see the different crystallisation effects of Yuki enamel. Yuki means snow in Japanese. It has a green or blue background dotted with small golden yellow crystallisations. It is a glossy glaze with very natural and discreet colours.

Picture

Kaki / persimmon

This glaze was traditionally used in Japan for many centuries, it is made with a lot of iron oxide that give this bright orange/red and metallic black dots.
This glaze is brilliant and is still used for bowl and Chawan coloration in Japan.
Picture

Lavender Blue Song

A glaze that recalls the ceramics of the Song period (12th China) with cracks that gives an antique pot appearance with a very discreet pale blue colour.
Picture

Old White Song

A glaze that recalls the ceramics of the Song period (12th China) with cracks that gives an antique pot appearance with a very discreet pale cream colour.

Grey Song

An enamel that recalls the ceramics of the Song period (12th China) with cracks that gives an antique pot appearance with a very discreet pale gray color.
Picture

Murasakino

A striking glaze with purple and pink nucleations on a dark blue background.
Picture

Blue song on black sandstone

The Song dynasty was present in China from the 10th century. Song ceramics are known for their sober and refined aesthetics, as well as simple and elegant shapes. This blue enamel with slight color variations reminds us of these old ceramics.
Picture

Komacu

A shiny turquoise to water green enamel whose white micro-crystals evoke snowflakes.
Picture

Mint Green

A beautiful bright green enamel that contrasts matte black parts with ochre. Works with most deciduous trees.
Picture

Komori

An enamel with white and black crystal nucleations, on a matte blue to green background.

Picture

Black Ochre

A glaze that gives particularly interesting effects. Placed on black earth it can be bright green but also orange-beige to matte black. An enamel that of course can highlight hardwoods but that we also offer for junipers or pine trees with particularly interesting results. A proposal off the beaten track but worth trying.
Picture

Ochre Green

A bright green glaze with more matte ochre and black parts.

... As a bonsai related artform, Suiseki has long been displayed at high level bonsai exhibitions, both as an accent with a tree, as well as on their own. Thanks to their high power of suggestion, such stones reflect the essence of landscapes, people, animals and other objects.
Through the art of suiseki, Kawasemi Studios help us to experience the entire universe and cultivate a mindful approach to ourselves and others.

'Our aim is to provide everything you need for Suiseki: stones, the wooden bases, Suiban, matching scrolls and also education and knowledge. Like this we want to share our love for stones and fine arts as well as raise people's awareness of how to combine elements in displays'.

Kawasemi Studios was born from a passion for Suiseki, nature and ceramics.
The creators, Swiss couple Nadja and Sandro Tschudin, live by Lake Lucerne amid the snow-capped Swiss Alps, an idyllic location for Suiseki - both stone appreciation and Tanseki (stone searching trips).

Kawasemi add an exciting new dimension to the EBPC.

We are delighted to welcome Nadja & Sandro into the EBPC family and look forward to learning more about the world of Suiseki and Kawasemi Studios.

Please JOIN US in welcoming new EBPC member - Igor Carino, of Italy !

Picture
Please join us in welcoming a world-class artist, ‘Igor Carino’ as an EBPC member!

This inspirational artist has dedicated himself to bonsai for 20 years and has been creating bonsai ceramics for 18. For the past decade, Igor has been researching how to realize his dream – creating bonsai ceramics through the fusion of traditional pot-building principles with cutting-edge modern technology.

His exceptional 3D-Printed pots won 1st prize at the famous pot contest of the 47th Gafu ten in Kyoto, as well as contests in Europe.

These fascinating pieces have incredible detail in their design and patterned finish, yet retain all of the charms of old Japanese anagama-fired ceramics. Each pot from this process is unique, and the pots have a superb wood-fired sheen, with flame signatures, and natural ash deposit glazes.

A LIMITED EDITION RANGE of Gafu ten winning design pots will be IN-STORE on FRIDAY at 18.00 GMT!

A select range of these Gafu-ten winning design pots will be made available for EBPC customers tomorrow (Friday 21st April) in the EBPC Online Store.

These award-winning pots are hand built at the base, and then, once designed and a computer program is built, they are 3D printed using traditional clay - high-quality Japanese or French stoneware. The pots are constantly attended to during this long process and then are finished by hand. The rim is then hand built, and once leather hard, areas of the pots are smoothed to a polished finish. The pots are then wood-fired for 11 hours, another process that requires constant attention, in a special high-temperature wood-fired kiln (1350°C), designed and built by ceramic artist and kiln expert Frederick L. Olsen. A mix between traditional Western wood kilns and Japanese kilns.
