WELCOME to the EBPC - VASART BONSAI, Italy.
In Vasart Bonsai, we have certainly found such a treasure. Please JOIN US in welcoming the highly accomplished 'father & son' team from Italy. Samuele and Giovan Battista Quarena.
When I saw the magnificent trio of painted pots Vasart displayed at the EBPC Trophy Pot Display in Belgium this year, I was astounded by both the intricate beauty and by the technical proficiency displayed in these inspirational works. From predicting the exact shrinkages for the pots to fit seamlessly into their stands, to the impressive forms, and their intricate decor, these pots tick all of the 'pot display' boxes for me. |
To celebrate their joining of the EBPC, Vasart Bonsai have been meticulously creating a wonderful limited-edition set of painted pots, all bearing the EBPC stamp.
Locally collected and cleaned clay - expertly made forms, and stunning paintings ranging from fun cartoon-esque to traditional landscapes, in reds, blues, or 5 colour. All pots are high-fired Stoneware, and come with a certificate of authenticity.

A great talent from the Netherlands!
Michal Mokry is a very talented bonsai ceramist from the Netherlands, currently producing exciting glazed bonsai pots in contemporary designs, inspired by core traditional styles.
Mindful of the intricates of bonsai display, this artist strives to creating pots that work most harmoniously with a tree. With clean straight lines and often seamlessly integrated feet, the tree remains the main focus of the composition, yet on closer inspection the shibui quality and dynamic glazes never fail to astound!
Pots are made by a variety of methods, including ‘kurinuki’ hand-carved mame sized pots, and slab building for the Shohin and larger pots. Michal has also made some of his own forms/moulds by way of 3D printing, which he uses to help form the main body of more complex designs.
Read more about Michal and his work in his EBPC 'Artist Profile' here!
We are very excited to welcome Michal to the EBPC family, and a selection of his beautiful glazed pots will be available in the EBPC online store tomorrow
- Friday 28th March at 18.00pm (GMT).

The 6th ExpoBonsaiUK - Sunday 13th April!
Although not in any way 'elitist', this special exhibition has always striven towards helping everyone to consider, appreciate and improve, both the quality of their bonsai but also of the quality of displays in the U.K. The organisers are to be commended for their consciensious hard work, and efforts. Even outside of the event, having gone to the lengths of organising 'display' workshops and talks by professionals in preparation for this exhibition.
The intricacies of bonsai display are fascinating, and executed with consideration and thought, can result in our trees being showing at their very best - highlighting the trees most favourable characteristics, and reinforcing the trees 'story' through the accompanying elements within the composition.
Having started as an evolution from a long running club level show (Heathrow Bonsai Show), in recent years BonsaiExpoUK has continued to rise in popularity, in the quality of trees and displays, and in the incredible atmosphere at this buzzing event.
For me - the chance to display these great pieces and discuss the details of his pots and compositions with friends and enthusiasts is priceless.
I won't say too much before the exhibition, but there will be a blog article after the event.
If you can make it to Crawley on the 13th of April 2025, this is certainly an event not to be missed!
Thanks, and see you there,
Alex

A dedicated family man, Andrew was a loving husband and father, and a loyal and caring friend to many, including myself. He will be sorely missed by many. Our thoughts go out to his wife Marie and family.
An original founding member of the EBPC, and a close personal friend, Andrew Pearson of Stone Monkey Ceramics will be long remembered by many for his kind heart, his extraordinary craftsmanship, and the impact he had on bonsai ceramics globally. From when he began making pottery in 2002, Andrew's pots continued to improve in finesse and popularity. A definite style developed, to which Andrew stayed true, even as his work evolved and he experimented with different types and styles of bonsai pots over time. |
Instrumental in the formation of the EBPC in 2017, Andrew was not only a big inspiration, but was also very supportive from the very inception. Many exquisite Stone Monkey Ceramics pots, with EBPC stamps, are now in the hands of enthusiasts worldwide, for which we are very grateful to him. Representing Andrew and his world-class bonsai ceramics has been an honour and a pleasure.
In 2015, with the encouragement of Peter Warren and Akiyama San, Andrew was invited to take part in the 10th Annual Shohachi contest at the Gafu Ten in Kyoto, Japan.
An incredible honour, especially as non-Japanese were not previously eligable to participated.
In so doing, Andrew helped strengthen the bond with Japanese bonsai, and also open the gates for other leading artists across the world to be able enter this prestigious event.
In 2015 Andrew also decided with friends and fellow well-known potters Tom Benda and Thor Holvila, to meet on a yearly basis at a new location, and produce unique artisanal pieces created as a fusion of three very different styles. The Triskele group was born.
Over the years the EBPC purchased quite a few of these great pieces, which proudly remain in the EBPC collection. It is a wonder to appreciate Andrew's work within these great pieces, in additional to that of Tom and Thor. This fusion of styles allowed each artist to push their boundaries whilst being altered or embellished by the eye of a fellow artist. |
Andrew was also a big fan of studio ceramics, and I was always absorbed when I got the chance to see his collection. Especially fascinating to him were the Mashiko style works resulting from the collaboration between Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada in the 1920's, and the great artists this movement has produced since.
Always very generous with his knowledge, our chats about the intricacies and techniques employed will remain with me, and further encouraged my own captivation and appreciation of yunomi and chawan. On request for yunomi in green, Andrew was kind enough to make these yunomi for my collection, with tactile manipulated and faceted forms and interesting glazes. The bottom right yunomi was also rake fired and has incredible irridenscence, in addition to dents for thumb and forefinger. |
At the end of January 2025, Andrew was due to retire from his work at the London Underground, to concentrate on his ceramics full time.
Many bonsai potters, including some of Europe & America's most celebrated, have benefited from the help and words of advice of this great artist. Andrew liked to share his knowledge to the benefit of other artists and to improve bonsai ceramics in general.
Andrew's legacy will live on, in those touched by his generous nature, in his thousands of exquisite creations, and through his impact on European and global bonsai ceramics.
A memorial will be held for Andrew on Saturday 4th January

Visitors will also be able to enjoy and revel in an honorary display put on by the great Peter Krebs of Germany!
Peter became a self-taught potter in the 1970s out of his enthusiasm for bonsai and antique pots and developed masterly skills over many productive years. Studying old Chinese pots was always very important to him. Peter Krebs is possibly the only bonsai ceramist to have mastered all known decoration techniques. Whether carving, inlay, engobe, glaze painting, modeled reliefs, unglazed pots with special surfaces or self-developed glazes, his pots have always been of strikingly high quality and accordingly sought after.
His current works, especially the elaborately painted pots, are of sensational beauty and a selection was awarded a prize at the Taikan-ten 2023 in Kyoto. The pots you will be able to see on display will be such painted works.
Discover how these accomplished artists go about creating their fantastic bonsai ceramics. It is fascinating to witness the different dynamic styles of these leading artists from around Europe, fuse into one unique creation!
Thank you and see you in February!
